An intrduction to commonly used techniques.

- Preheating the oven
- Putting the batter or dough into the baking pan
- Pricking the surface of the batter or dough to remove bubbles
- Moving baking pans to different racks in the oven (especially if more than one pan is used)
- Changing the oven temperature
- Testing for doneness (follow instructions in recipe)
- Removing the food after cooking
- Letting the cooked food cool down
- Decorating the food
Terms used to describe techniques used for these baking steps include:
Drop, pour put a lump of dough or batter into a baking pan
Brush dip a brush in oil or egg and then brush the liquid over dough
Bake cook in a hot oven
Brown, broil cook at high heat under a broiler to brown the surface of a food
Cool on a rack move a hot baking pan or cookie sheet to a wire rack until it cools to room temperature
Remove from pan use a spatula to remove cookies from a cookie sheet or to loosen a cake around the edges of the pan, then flip it onto a serving dish
Frost spread frosting on cookies or a cake
